Priority 1. UAVs, counter-UAV, military AI and new technologies in conflicts
Ukraine and Europe: satellite communications as a lever of pressure
update Starshield — Rubio confirmed that the military version is currently unavailable to Ukraine
For the first time, a US official has openly acknowledged that Ukraine is cut off from Starshield. Starshield is a military tier on top of the same Starlink satellite network, with a higher permitted terminal speed and traffic priority. Secretary of State Marco Rubio framed the position as follows: Starlink is a commercial product, Starshield is a military one, and "it is currently unavailable to Ukraine" source.
Zelensky at the same time reported that terminals on Ukrainian territory are still shutting off at speeds above 161 km/h. To rule out a technical malfunction, the Ukrainian side drove vehicles with terminals on EU roads at 180+ km/h, and there the connection worked. Hence Kyiv's conclusion about a "planned operation" source. Axios describes a closed loop of responsibility: SpaceX speaks of a technical problem, its own sources point to the White House, and the White House points to Musk source.
For the front, the consequence is concrete. According to Zelensky, Ukrainian interceptors of jet-powered "Shaheds" that operate via Starlink are currently not being used. The Russian channel "Voenny Osvedomitel" interprets this as follows: the restriction is now imposed by the Pentagon, not by Musk. The 160 km/h ceiling keeps medium-range drones in service but shuts off terminals on jet-powered strike drones and jet-powered interceptors source.
update Starlink — strikes by Ukrainian USF on vehicles fell 71% on the first day of restrictions, now back to previous level
This is the first quantitative estimate of what the shutdown cost. According to a chart published by the channel "Oko Gora", on the first day of restrictions the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) attacked 71% less Russian equipment than the average over the previous month. As of October 17, the number of attacks had returned to its previous level source. That is, the tactical level adapted within a few days, not weeks.
The Russian side also offers an explanation. The channel "Khronika BPLA" points out that the 160 km/h restriction barely affects "middle-strike" drones: Hornet, "Rubaka", "Bulava", RAM-2X. Their cruise speed is already lower, and some of them fly via mesh networks (self-organizing radio networks where each node relays the signal to its neighbors). The long-range FP-1, FP-2, "Lyutyi" and "Bobyor" rely on inertial and optical navigation and on CRPA (Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna — a multi-element antenna that "nulls" the directions toward sources of satellite navigation jamming) source.
[TECH] A Ukrainian analysis, translated by the Russian KTsPN, contains useful figures source:
• Starlink Mini on a civilian plan is limited to roughly 70 km/h. For a reconnaissance fixed-wing drone, 60 km/h is already stall speed; normal cruise begins at 80 km/h.
• Long-range drones fly at 180–200 km/h and above. Without Starshield, the ability to strike fast-moving targets, such as radars and launchers in Crimea, is lost.
• The alternatives are described soberly. OneWeb is noticeably inferior to Starlink in constellation size. Amazon Leo is not yet deployed and carries the same "American" dependency. Radio links give up to 180 km versus 300–400 km for Starlink. Mesh networks lose connectivity when a node is lost.
• Starlink Mini costs 15–20 thousand UAH; alternative communications cost about 10 thousand dollars per airframe.
• The Russian system "Rassvet" ("Byuro 1440") is analyzed separately: 292 satellites by 2027 and 924 by 2035. Round-the-clock coverage over Ukraine requires 200–300 satellites; currently only 2–4 hours of communication per day are available.
Analyst Chris O'Wiki draws a broader conclusion. In his view, the episode turned the "kill switch" for American weapons, including the F-35, from a theoretical threat into a demonstrated one, and this may push buyers to abandon American systems source.
update Arson of a Starlink ground station in Poland — Turkish gang "Daltons" suspected of involvement
The Turkish criminal gang "Daltons" is suspected of involvement in the arson. It may have acted on the orders of Russian intelligence services source.
Countering jet-powered "Gerans"
update "Bars" — a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile and artillery brigade showed a rocket-booster-launched jet interceptor against the "Geran-5"
The jet-powered strike drone "Bars" has been converted into an air-defense weapon, and this is already visible in combat footage. The 1021st Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces published a launch: judging by the footage, this is the Bars CM "Gladiator" version, launched from a towed launcher with a rocket booster. The target is the Russian jet-powered "Geran-5" source source.
Effectiveness estimates diverge. On October 4, Zelensky put the share of kills by "Bars" at about 30%. Defense Minister Khmara cited a single episode where five launches yielded five hits. There are no consolidated statistics.
Context matters. According to Zelensky, 55–60% of downed jet-powered drones are currently accounted for by aviation source. This is a costly expenditure of fighter resources, which is precisely why a mass-produced replacement is being sought.
Ukraine: six private companies have reached serial production of small turbojet engines
Until recently, such engines were not produced in the Ukrainian private sector. According to Brave1, 11 companies are engaged in development, six of them already in serial production. A dedicated funding program was launched in 2025; the path to serial production took more than a year and a half source.
The engines are intended primarily for high-speed drones: with them, aircraft reach significantly higher speeds than with conventional propellers.
"Come Back Alive" handed over to the Ukrainian Armed Forces 80 experimental interceptors of jet-powered "Gerans"
The foundation is financing not procurement but field selection. 80 experimental interceptors worth 13.6 million UAH were handed over, i.e. about 170 thousand UAH apiece source. Since September, the foundation has contracted several hundred systems from various manufacturers. After combat use, the best models will be refined and put into serial production.
Why a quadcopter won't accelerate to 300 km/h — an engineering analysis of the interceptor
[TECH] The Russian channel "Tekhnologii Pobedy" explains why a high-speed interceptor needs a streamlined body rather than more powerful motors source. Drag grows with the square of speed, required power with the cube: twice as fast means eight times more power.
The key quantity is CdA, i.e. the drag coefficient multiplied by area. For an open frame it is 0.03–0.05 m², while 300 km/h requires no more than 0.0044 m². The difference is roughly an order of magnitude, and it cannot be closed by choosing motors. The article also covers the barrier around 200 km/h, the blade tip speed limit of 0.75 Mach, and CFD testing (numerical flow simulation) before tooling is made.
Russian drones: new modifications and firmware
"Gerbera-2" — 10-kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead, incendiary mixture and 12-element "Kometa-M12"
The Russian decoy drone "Gerbera", in the "Gerbera-2" version, has turned into a full-fledged strike aircraft. The Ukrainian side is recording it more and more often. Demining photos show that it carries an OFZBCh-10 (a 10 kg high-explosive fragmentation incendiary warhead), a package of incendiary mixture and a 12-element anti-jam navigation antenna "Kometa-M12" source source. For comparison: early versions carried the eight-element "Kometa-M8".
Russian 32-element CRPAs versus Ukrainian 16-element ones on Fire Point drones
The Russian vendor channel GoDrone reports a race in antenna element count. The Ukrainian side showed a 16-element CRPA on Fire Point strike drones, while Russian developers already have 32-element samples source. More elements give more "nulls" in the radiation pattern, meaning the system suppresses more jamming sources simultaneously. At the same time, the author himself notes that twice as many elements does not mean twice as good: much depends on algorithms and calibration.
TBF 8.2.3 firmware — Russian FPVs get protection against "smart" EW when the radio link is compromised
The FPV-vyZOV team has released a new version of the Russian military flight-controller firmware TBF. Version 8.2.3 improves resilience against "smart" EW (electronic warfare) in situations where the opposing side has already cracked the control radio link source. The pilot will not notice the changes; they concern the protective logic. In parallel, the TProgrammer4 programmer is ready.
update DJI Neo / Neo 2 / Avata 2 — full guide to the Russian "1001,"-firmware published: GPS-free mode, flight down to 0% battery, prices
[TECH] the document contains firmware commands, comparative performance specs of the three models and a scheme for night flights source. Small DJI drones are becoming a mass "consumable" for inspecting rooms, dugouts and trails before an assault source.
What the firmware does:
• removes Drone ID and flight logs, lifts no-fly zones and the 30 m altitude and 50 m range limits;
• enables three frequencies, 2.4, 5.2 and 5.8 GHz, at US-standard (FCC) power;
• adds a GPS-free mode, activated by the command gps_off, in the drone name field, and provides protection against spoofing (substitution of satellite coordinates);
• allows flying down to 0% battery charge;
• activates the drone locally, without DJI servers.
Approximate prices: Neo — 17 thousand rubles, Neo 2 — 25 thousand, Avata 2 — 50 thousand. The Neo 2 has the best visual positioning in the dark, with stabilization from 5 lux. For night inspection, two 500 lm lights, facing forward and downward, are recommended.
UMS-01 — universal drop system for the Autel Evo Max 4T and DJI Matrice 4T
The channel "..., как небо?" received a sample of a unified drop system for two "government-issue" quadcopters. It has yet to be tested in real conditions. The drop is controlled via the standard flight app, and the payload is placed strictly at the center of the body source. According to the author, the Autel equivalent costs five times as much. The previous version lifted off the ground and carried a short distance almost 3.5 kg, but the motors melted in the process. The Matrice is currently used as a bomber with VOG-25 at ranges over 10 km.
Ukrainian drones: range, endurance, navigation
Stellarion Deadliner — FPV drops depleted batteries in flight for +15% range
Ukrainian company Stellarion has fitted its Deadliner strike FPVs with a battery-drop module. Instead of one large battery, the drone carries several small ones and discards the depleted ones source. A discharged lithium battery loses almost no mass, so dropping it noticeably reduces the required thrust. The developer claims about a 15% gain and up to 50 km for the Deadliner R10. Until recently, typical FPV range was 10–20 km.
update Hornet — Russian channel spots a modification with Starlink and a 5 kg warhead
Based on photos, the Russian channel "Inzhenerny Front" describes an allegedly new modification of the Hornet fixed-wing strike drone with a Starlink terminal and a warhead of about 5 kg source. This is a claim by a single channel without measurements.
"Sokil" — 190 reconnaissance drones with GPS-free navigation for Ukrainian brigades
The Prytula Foundation handed over 190 "Sokil" reconnaissance drones worth 50.8 million UAH to eight units, including "Azov" and four air assault brigades source. Weight 8 kg, hand-launched, cruising speed 75 km/h, range up to 195 km, up to three hours in the air. The main claimed feature is operation under EW without a GPS signal.
Sensors, tunnels, positional tactics
Ukrainian tripwire sensors trigger a drone or mortar strike
The Russian "Akhmat" group, operating in Sumy Oblast, encountered inconspicuous sensors on routes for the first time. A triggered sensor gives a detection, after which a hexacopter, an FPV or a fiber-optic drone launches at the point, or a 120-mm mortar fires source. This is a working "sensor-to-shooter" scheme without an observer on site.
"Vietnamization" of the line of contact: tunnels for infantry and the hunt for them
Both sides are going underground. The Ukrainian 93rd Brigade approaches positions through underground passages in the Kramatorsk direction source. Russian assault groups have infiltrated the Ukrainian rear through pipes. The Ukrainian side now destroys such pipes in two ways: by dropping several munitions from a heavy copter into the opening, or by delivering a single large bomb on a UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) source.
A separate technique is "jump-off pads". More than ten Ukrainian "waiting" FPVs were positioned on the roof of a school in Komar to reduce flight time to target source. The downside of such concentration is high vulnerability once detected.
BTR-82A gets a new factory "mangal"
At CSTO exercises in Belarus, a Russian BTR-82A was shown with a new factory-made "mangal" cage. Infantry now ride either on the outside or under a canopy at the rear source.
Ground robots and simulators
Russian MT-GROUP describes night operation of the "Depesha-3" UGV along pre-studied routes. At night the camera gives a low-contrast picture, so roles in the crew are divided: one drives the vehicle, the second monitors the surroundings source.
Two VR simulators for mobile fire groups (MFGs, crews that shoot down drones with small arms and turrets) have appeared in Russia at once:
• "Aerosim Antidron" by Ryazan-based "Aerotek" — takes the soldier through the full cycle from signal direction-finding to engagement and adapts to the customer's equipment source;
• "Katran" by PPSh — the soldier operates a real turret while wearing goggles source.
Counter-UAS: the West and the market
Skapion Native Counter-Swarm — interceptor missile with a target price of 10 thousand dollars
Israeli-American Skapion has raised 36 million dollars for a system against drone swarms. The main bet is price source. The target interceptor cost is about 10 thousand dollars at production of thousands of units, which is orders of magnitude cheaper than a typical SAM.
[TECH] parameters as claimed by the developer:
• solid-fuel motor, up to 8g;
• interception at altitudes from 20 m to 6 km and ranges up to 7 km;
• launchers for 25–250 missiles for trucks, trailers and ships;
• AI target allocation, more than 100 simultaneously, interception probability over 97%.
All figures are not yet confirmed by testing.
Airwolf — hybrid C-UAS system on a racing six-wheel chassis
MDH Strategic Services together with Parker Hannifin showed at AUSA (Association of the United States Army exhibition) a mobile C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems) source. The RCR 6WAP chassis was built by the defense division of a NASCAR team. The weapon set covers different targets: a six-barrel M134 against small drones, Hellfire against large ones, two Stinger against cruise missiles, as well as APKWS II (guided 70-mm rockets).
From the same stream: ASELSAN showed a "drone killer" pickup with a 40 km radar, IAI an "aerial tower" for air defense that lifts sensors above the radio horizon source.
Military AI, cyber, autonomy
update Maven Smart System — became the unified environment for NATO command-post exercise Avenger Triad 2026
During the October 6–15 exercise, the Palantir AI platform for the first time served as a common environment for testing the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative (EFDI). It integrated the EFDI Data Backbone data channel, the Gaia mapping module, Panoscope monitoring and drone control dashboards source. The distributed command post architecture will be carried over to Steadfast Defender 2027 for field testing.
Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar said in an interview that after the Pentagon dropped Anthropic, the department has already replaced it with models from xAI, OpenAI and NVIDIA Nemotron source.
YFQ-44A Fury — F-22 pilot controlled an uncrewed wingman by assigning tasks
The US Air Force tested a scheme in which the pilot commands rather than flies. Under the CCA program (Collaborative Combat Aircraft — uncrewed "wingmen" for fighters), an F-22 pilot gave commands to the Anduril aircraft. Onboard autonomy itself determined how to carry them out and planned the maneuvers source.
Fedorov: "robot army", humanoids at 10–20 thousand dollars and Karp among investors
Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is building a private defense company with a corporate fund. Its parent structure is registered outside Ukraine, and investors include Palantir CEO Alex Karp source.
There are three directions: a "robot army", physical AI (AI for controlling physical machines) and cheap long-range "AI strikes". For humanoid robots, the goal is to reduce the price from the current 40–70 thousand to 10–20 thousand dollars, with a requirement for tens of thousands of units. The public goal is first combat use within six months. Fedorov also warns of the next two Russian threats: cheap AI drones costing a few thousand dollars and scalable high-speed "Banderol" missile-drones.
Ukrainian side struck a Roboavia workshop producing Klin AI drones
A production and warehouse building of Russia's Roboavia near Rostov has reportedly been hit source. The company makes Klin AI-enabled kamikaze drones, Sarych-2 reconnaissance drones and Syurpriz quadcopters.
Cryptography: according to the channel, an Anthropic model reconstructed the origin of the "random" constants of the P-256 curve
According to the DARPA&CIA channel, an Anthropic research model found the "fingerprint" of the lrand48 generator from the C standard library in the constants of the P-256 elliptic curve. By rewinding the generator, the model calculated the system time of the runs in the period from May 1997 to April 1998 source. No secret backdoor was found. The signal itself lies elsewhere: AI rapidly reconstructs engineering decisions of past years, which means the risk to legacy cryptography is growing. There is no independent confirmation in the materials.
Middle East, Africa and other zones
The Houthis, according to Ukrainian data, have mastered fiber-optic FPV with the participation of IRGC officers source.
Belarusian Mirotvorets jet drones have been spotted with the special forces of Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army source.
In the Strait of Hormuz, two tankers struck mines; according to the IRGC, they were sailing with their transponders switched off and without coordinating their route with Iran source.
Over the North Sea, British Voyager and Typhoon aircraft twice had dangerous close encounters with unidentified drones at altitudes above 10 thousand feet (about 3 km) in February 2026. This is 25 times higher than the 400 feet permitted for civilian drones source.
Black Sea: drones against merchant ships
Chelsea 3 — crew and nature of the hull breach point to USVs, Russian channels call them Russian
The Black Sea is turning into a zone of uncrewed warfare against merchant shipping with a direct reach onto NATO territory. The bulk carrier Chelsea 3, attacked on 13 October off the coast of Bulgaria, was towed to a Bulgarian port. The hull damage is characteristic of USVs (uncrewed surface vessels), and the crew told Western outlets about three drones that "came over the water" source. Russian channels call this the first results of using Russian USVs against ships. In parallel, footage is being published in which a "Lancet" intercepts a Ukrainian USV source.
Romania and Bulgaria propose a joint NATO counter-drone command in the Black Sea
This is a direct institutional response to the attacks on ships. Romanian F-16s shot down two Russian jet drones over territorial waters, which radars had been tracking from as far as 120 km east of Snake Island source. Bucharest, together with Sofia, has proposed creating a rotational NATO counter-drone command in the Black Sea and is ready to lead it from 2028 source. Bulgaria separately requested fighters and C-UAS assets from NATO source.
Priority 2. Military innovation
Rusty Dagger — options found in Pentagon contract that nearly double its value
An entry in the US federal contract database FPDS for contract FA2385-26-C-B019 for the AGM-188A Rusty Dagger cruise missile showed a total value of 26.3 million dollars including all options source. The June announcement cited 12.4 million; 11.6 million has already been obligated.
In parallel, KONGSBERG Australia signed a memorandum with the missile's developer Zone 5 on cheap mass-produced missiles for Australia and New Zealand source. This covers both Rusty Dagger and the White Spike drone interceptor, which is being integrated into the NASAMS air defense system.
TAI: more than 10,000 UAVs by 2035
Turkish aircraft manufacturer TAI announced a production plan through 2035: more than 1,500 crewed aircraft and over 10,000 drones, including more than 250 ANKA-3 loyal wingmen source. The key organizational change: about 70% of the work will go to subcontractors.
Other signals
• Kapta Space raised 24 million dollars for compact electronically steered space-based radars to track ballistic missiles in the midcourse phase source.
• Russia's InSys released the FMC151P module based on RFSoC (a chip combining an FPGA with direct RF sampling) for radars, software-defined radio and neural networks, with two 100GbE ports source.
• Finland is preparing a law allowing military intelligence to conduct offensive cyber operations and use drones abroad without moving to open war source.
• According to a CSIS estimate, during the conflict with Iran the US expended up to 61% of roughly 2,300 Patriot missiles and up to 82% of 355 THAAD missiles. Replenishing stocks will take until 2030 source. Greece, meanwhile, has not confirmed the transfer of up to 200 PAC-2 missiles to Ukraine source.
• The Ukrainian government launched an experiment with medical drones with a range of up to 700 km. A national civilian drone traffic management system is being built on its basis source.
• In Russia, the RSPP (Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs) is asking for clear rules on imposing temporary administration on enterprises for lacking protection against drones source. In parallel, "Stalinskie Sokoly" is recruiting FPV pilots for facility protection with salaries of 513–665 thousand rubles source. Counter-drone defense of facilities in Russia is becoming an obligation of business and a private labor market.
Priority 3. Conflict around Ukraine: trends and signals
Strikes deep into Russia: digital infrastructure as a new class of targets. Overnight, 126 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Leningrad Oblast, and another 76 on the approach to Moscow. An FP-5 "Flamingo" missile was shot down over Smolensk source. The Atlantic Council believes that strikes on data centers cause cascading failures for 60 thousand Russian organizations and in eight countries, and that recovery will take months due to sanctions source. The Ryazan refinery, according to Reuters, halted the AT-6 primary processing unit source.
Russian air campaign. Russia used Kh-22/32 missiles for the first time since July source. The Russian side is exploiting heavy cloud cover to mass-employ piston-engine "Gerans" across all of Ukraine, including the west. Mobile groups and interceptors find it harder to operate in such conditions. An "Iskander-M" struck "Zaporizhstal" source. During the day on 17 October, Ukrainian air defense shot down 140 of 157 drones, including 22 of 25 jet-powered ones, and all six "Banderol"/"Dan-T" source.
Front. Rybar confirms the presence of Russian assault troops in the built-up area of Dobropillia, but admits that clearing is ongoing and Russian drone crews are not yet entering the city source. The pace of Russian advance in the Dobropillia direction, according to DeepState, is about 0.4 km² per day in October versus 8.6 in October 2025 source. The Ukrainian operation "Vivaldi" near Lyman continues.
Signals for the future.
• Gerasimov promised strikes on Ukraine's strategic bridges; the same night Trump suspended the "Graham sanctions" source.
• Zelensky warns of the possible deployment of Russian ballistic missiles in Belarus and speaks of ramping up production of air defense turrets.
• In November, Poland will host exercises of 1,500 troops from the UK, France and Germany on deploying a contingent in Ukraine.
• Belgium will transfer 10 F-16s by the end of the year; Ukraine is awaiting Gripens.
• Putin has begun talking about a "buffer zone" on Ukrainian territory source.
What to watch
- The Starshield kill switch has been officially acknowledged. Rubio confirmed the shutdown, and Zelensky proved the geographic selectivity of the restriction by driving vehicles across the EU. The tactical level recovered within a few days, but Starlink-equipped jet interceptors have been switched out of air defense. Hence the accelerated bet on domestic turbines, rocket launch for the "Bars" and mesh networks.
- Russia's "Kosmos-2612" approached an ICEYE commercial radar satellite to within 4.5 km. This is the first overt "hunt" for Western commercial space assets, whose data Ukrainian intelligence relies on.
- The Black Sea is becoming an uncrewed theater in direct contact with NATO: Russian USVs attack ships off Bulgaria, Romanian F-16s shoot down drones, Bucharest and Sofia propose creating an alliance counter-drone command.
- Data centers have become a full-fledged target of Ukrainian long-range strikes on par with refineries, and the effect extends beyond Russia.
- The race for the cheap shot at a drone: the Skapion interceptor at 10 thousand dollars, the Hanwha laser at 1.5 dollars, Germany's net drones, and on the other side the "Gerbera-2" with a 10-kg warhead. Cost per kill is becoming the main parameter of air defense.

Military space and space-derived data
A Russian inspector next to a Western radar satellite. Kosmos-2612, through a series of manoeuvres, approached the Finnish radar satellite ICEYE-X36, registered in the USA. On 16 October the distance was about 4.5 km at a relative velocity of only 4 m/s, meaning the spacecraft are moving on an almost shared course rather than flying past each other source. The satellite was launched in April along with five others, and in May the whole group performed fuel-costly manoeuvres to align their orbital planes with the ICEYE satellites. CSIS does not rule out preparation for ASAT (anti-satellite weapon) use and recalls that in 2020 Kosmos-2543 released an object at a speed of 186 m/s. An independent analysis is being conducted by the tracker SatTrackCam source. For OSINT this is a direct risk: ICEYE SAR imagery (radar imaging through cloud cover) is one of the main commercial sources for Ukraine.
Starlink as GPS-free navigation. Musk claimed that Starlink provides precise navigation without GPS, but gave no accuracy figures. The terminal computes its coordinates itself in the gaps between TDMA frames (a scheme in which terminals share a channel by time slots) source. A hardware teardown shows that only the stationary consumer V5 received its own PNT (positioning, navigation and timing) without a GNSS chip. The automotive version REV5_AUTO retained the ST STA8089 receiver, and the Starshield version of the Mini retained the multi-frequency ST Teseo V. Wherever there is movement or a military customer, satellite navigation has been kept as a backup.
Constellations and communications.
• Italy's IRIDE completed deployment of the Eaglet II optical constellation with the launch of eight satellites on Transporter-18. Next in the programme are the radar Nimbus SAR and NOX SAR source.
• From 2027 the EU is launching satellite monitoring of the Arctic and creating an "Arctic cable hub" to protect undersea cables source.
• Thales is delivering to US special operations forces (JSOC) the Raider Blade terminal, which works simultaneously with LEO, MEO and GEO orbits and with OneWeb and Amazon Leo. This is the market's answer to dependence on a single provider source.
Data access and OSINT tools.
• The Ukrainian platform Areal Vision turns ordinary videos into measurable 3D models of objects. The Petersburg Oil Terminal has already been analysed on it: 32 tanks, about 442 thousand m³ source.
• The Ukrainian app Povitriana tryvoha (Air Alert) has opened a public real-time map of Russian drone and missile movements. Ballistic missiles and targets faster than 2000 km/h are not displayed on it source.
• The Russian map Detektor AERO crashes under evening load and is moving to new servers source.
• Iran uses tankers' disabled transponders (AIS) in the Strait of Hormuz as a formal justification for strikes. "Dark" traffic is becoming a target marker not only for intelligence.
Under the radar
• SatTrackCam's analysis of the Kosmos-2612 approach to ICEYE-X36 — an independent orbital check of CSIS's thesis about "cat and mouse" in orbit source.
• Analysis of Starlink GPS-free navigation: the GNSS receiver has been removed only from the stationary V5; the Starshield Mini retains the ST Teseo V source.
• Options in the Rusty Dagger contract: a full value of 26.3 million dollars, which was not in the Pentagon's June announcement source.
• [TECH] An engineering position on AI drone autonomy: a compromised onboard computer is dangerous even without command privileges, because false visual odometry or false detections lead the aircraft astray. This especially applies to GNSS-free flight. The authors propose bench testing for contradictory data with the communication link maintained source.
• [TECH] Aerodynamics of a 300 km/h interceptor: CdA figures and the propeller speed limit source.
• TBF 8.2.3 firmware for Russian FPVs with EW protection when the channel has been compromised source.
• The first public handover of Come Back Alive foundation interceptors and its field selection model source.
And what about our Chinese comrades?
• The PLA Information Support Force has introduced its own "fibre-optic radar" for monitoring hundreds of kilometres of underground communication lines. The system indicates the coordinates and depth of damage and, using a database of more than 1000 vibration models, distinguishes background noise from construction work near the cable source. In essence, this is a distributed acoustic sensor that protects military communications from blasting and sabotage.
• UAV units of the Xinjiang Military District practised aerial reconnaissance in joint ground-air exercises source.
• On 21–22 October in Shanghai, the PLA Navy is holding a Western Pacific Naval Symposium seminar on the application of AI in naval medicine, including submariner rescue source.
• The Chinese strike drone CH-95 has been spotted for the first time in imagery of the base in Bosaso (Somalia), which is presumably operated by the UAE. This is a signal of export and combat use against ISIS source.
• Palmer Luckey (Anduril) claims that American electronics' dependence on China is an economic choice by corporations, not a necessity. Studying laptop production in the USA, he estimated the cost increase at only about 20% source.

• The laser as a cheap shot has been confirmed in practice. At South Korean army exercises, Hanwha shot down three drones with the stationary Cheongwang Block-I and a vehicle-mounted 30 kW laser. The cost per kill is about 1.5 dollars, and the time to defeat a simple drone has been reduced to 1–2 seconds source. In the Russia-Ukraine theatre lasers are almost invisible: there the cost per shot is being reduced with interceptors and turrets.
• Ukraine and NATO Allied Command Transformation have created AI model No. 13, which predicts the type, time, location and intensity of Russian UAV attacks based on history, weather and the situation source. Telegram channels write about responding to strikes after the fact; here the subject is pre-emption.
• At the REPMUS 26 exercise, Ukraine's Delta connected aerial, surface and underwater unmanned systems and radars via the NATO standard STANAG 4817 source. This is a counterweight to the "dependence on a single provider" thesis: the Ukrainian command-and-control system is being integrated into alliance standards rather than into a specific company's product.
• Germany has approved the procurement of net-launching interceptor drones paired with jammers and radars, as well as Patriot launchers to replace those transferred to Ukraine source.
• GM Defense is building an unmanned Silverado pickup with a Locust X3 laser, 102 kW of exportable power and a payload capacity of up to 3.6 t. The prototype is expected by June 2027 source. This transfers the Ukrainian logic of "UGV as a carrier" to a US commercial platform.
• NIST has demonstrated a two-laser optical frequency comb chip for future compact atomic clocks needed for GPS-free drone navigation. So far this is only one component source. At the front, meanwhile, alternative navigation today relies on CRPA and optics, while clock-based navigation remains several years away.
