Ukraine and Russia: strikes on Kyiv's bridges and the dispute over the Geran control link

update KRSN — after the Southern Bridge, Kyiv's second cable-stayed bridge, the Northern, has been hit

Russia has shifted strikes by jet-powered Gerans from the Southern to the Northern (formerly Moscow) Bridge. Both of Kyiv's cable-stayed road bridges have now been attacked, and the city is effectively divided along the Dnipro. The Northern Bridge is an eight-lane route to Chernihiv and Sumy, and supplies for the AFU's northern grouping run across it. After the strike the roadway and the trolleybus overhead contact network were damaged, and traffic from the left bank to the right is blocked (source). Klitschko confirmed a complete halt to traffic (source).

According to a Ukrainian channel, the strikes are delivered by the 50th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade of the Supreme High Command "Varyag". New Geran modifications have been trialed through it, including a variant against power-line pylons (source). The Russian "Voenny Optimist" calls the campaign a military-technical experiment. The targets are chosen so that the result is visible from space, and operator errors and warhead failures are corrected from wave to wave. The channel names the bridges of Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro as the next targets (source).

[TECH] The Russian "Russkiy Inzhener" analyzed the limitations of elongated shaped charges. They cut up to 100 mm of metal and more, but only when the standoff distance is maintained and the detonation is perpendicular to the obstacle. Against inclined stay cables this requires a precisely constructed terminal trajectory. The author considers it more rational to strike reinforced concrete with a shaped charge of about 300 mm caliber: such a charge gives about 2 m of penetration while severing the rebar (source).

Ukraine is responding with engineering. Transport Minister Kalashnyk announced the construction of earth-fill dams with pontoon crossings in Kyiv and other cities. The deadline is up to three months, and the throughput is at least half that of the existing bridges. In the long term a tunnel under the Dnipro is being discussed (source). According to the NYT, the nearest southern bypass crossing is 140 km away, which is about 2.5 hours of travel (source).

Zelensky's adviser "Flash" claimed there are Russian MESH relays inside Kyiv

Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov publicly claims that the accuracy against the bridges is provided by 1–3 Russian MESH relays (nodes of a self-organizing network that pass the signal through one another) hidden in Kyiv itself. According to him, as long as they are operating, it will not be possible to cover the city with EW (electronic warfare) assets (source). If this is confirmed, the task of the capital's air defense changes: rather than relay drones in the sky, it will have to search for low-power ground nodes among civilian buildings.

"Flash's" arguments are as follows. At the moment of the guided strike on the SBU there were no other Shaheds in the sky that could have served as relays. Hitting a bridge pylon or stay cables without online control right up to impact is impossible. Neither LTE modems nor "Rassvet" terminals were found in the wreckage. Separately, he warns that the same link can be used to target anti-aircraft guns on the bridges: the "Gepard" on the Southern Bridge has already shown up in Russian channels (source).

[TECH] The Russian RussianArms added an explanation of why such nodes are hard to direction-find. Their antennas have narrow radiation patterns, and they switch on in short sessions only in the terminal phase of flight, when the command-telemetry link and video are needed. En route the drone flies on GNSS (satellite navigation) with a "Kometa" receiver, a SADRA MIN 800 inertial module and a flight controller. An infographic of the component base is attached to the post (source). Russian channels react to the claim ironically (source). This is a signal, but not yet an established fact: no physical finds have been presented.

update F-16 — according to Zelensky, Ukraine is running out of 20 mm rounds for fighting jet-powered Gerans

The bottleneck of airborne interception has shifted from the number of aircraft to ammunition. Zelensky stated that F-16s and MiGs shoot down about 60% of jet-powered Gerans, but stocks of 20 mm cannon ammunition are running low (source). For cheap gun-based interception this is critical: replacing it with air-to-air missiles against such a target is economically unviable.

Counter-UAV: new solutions on the front line

Ukrainian ground robots have received a net launcher for protection against FPVs, including fiber-optic ones

For the first time, a new type of APS (active protection system) has been shown at scale at the front — a net launcher on a UGV (unmanned ground robotic system) against FPV drones (drones controlled from a first-person view). This is the first confirmed combat use of a Ukrainian anti-drone APS with a net. It closes a vulnerability against which EW is powerless — fiber-optic FPVs (source). The downing of a Russian FPV by a net launcher on the Kostiantynivka axis is shown separately (source).

The net is fired at a drone approaching the rear hemisphere and entangles its propellers. The Russian milinfolive notes that it is unknown whether the system works automatically or on the operator's command. It is effective when the drone approaches strictly horizontally (source). The Russian texBPLA, on the contrary, calls the net launcher automatic (source). According to RussianArms, in some of the footage the net launcher is mounted facing forward under an anti-drone "cope cage" and fires at an oncoming drone. The channel calls it a supplement to EW and fire, not a replacement (source).

update Arena-M — 12 defensive munitions, detonation 1–2 m from the turret, plans to raise it to 36

At the Tsentr-2026 exercise, the Russian Arena-M APS on a T-90M intercepted both FPV drones and fixed-wing UAVs. Detonation occurred about 1–2 m from the turret. The system has 12 defensive munitions, and in the future the number is to be increased to 36 (source). According to RussianArms, the guidance radars have received FPV detection algorithms and an expanded elevation sector. This narrows the "dead funnel" above the tank. An open question remains how the system copes with several drones from different directions (source).

TAF Industries: the Octopus interceptor for under $3000 and plans for an interceptor for high-speed jet drones

An interview with the new CEO of the Ukrainian group TAF Industries, Volodymyr Zinovskyi, shows how a mass FPV manufacturer is turning into a full-cycle holding company. FPV capacity is more than 80 thousand a month (source). The flagship Octopus interceptor has been made 20% faster after an upgrade and costs less than $3000. Against a Shahed priced at $60–100 thousand, that is a ratio of 1 to 20–30. The company's plans include an interceptor for high-speed jet drones.

[TECH] The PDF contains the full structure of the group and the figures (source). Through the acquisition of teams in 2025, the portfolio gained the "Plotnik" UGV (wheeled, logistics) and the "Legit" (tracked, with a turret and a kamikaze variant), the "Kvazar" EW and the "Strekoza" reconnaissance drone. Its own Middle Strike (a medium-range drone) is in development. The Babka reconnaissance drone is planned to be produced in Germany with Wingcopter at Volkswagen facilities, but the project is blocked by currency controls.

The lesson of 2024 is important: some FPVs became obsolete in warehouses because the military stopped trusting their frequencies. Through the TAF Lab project, the company reflashed the communications of 9381 drones directly in the units. Its position on autonomy is as follows: free search for any target is unacceptable, and a "delineated square" model by analogy with a minefield is being discussed. The company's assessment: the Russian side needs up to half a year to copy a Ukrainian technology or find a countermeasure to it.

Japan is purchasing drones from Ukraine's SkyFall on a trial basis

The head of the Japanese delegation, Itsunori Onodera, announced a trial purchase of a batch of SkyFall drones, type not specified (source). A Russian source suggests these are P1-SUN interceptors. In its assessment, the SkyFall interceptor will be the second Ukrainian development in Japanese hands: earlier, Terra Drone, which owns two Ukrainian firms, became a supplier to the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Ground robotics at the front

The AFU's 93rd Brigade made the first combat run of an amphibious UGV — 70 km across water obstacles

The "Alter Ego" unit of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade for the first time used an amphibious ground robot in combat to deliver cargo to positions cut off by rivers and swamps. Until now neither conventional UGVs nor heavy drones could get there in the required volume (source). The route was 40 km one way, about 70 km in total. The vehicle came under fire and remained operational. The first attempt failed due to a technical malfunction, the second was successful.

[TECH] Development took less than three months and followed two paths: refining the unit's own serial UGV and converting a commercial platform, including a Triton variant. The electronics, software, waterproofing and communications were replaced. The manufacturer's standard communications were deemed unsuitable and the unit installed its own, with a satellite component. The operator switches the "water–land" transition manually between two control systems; AI was not used. Plans include scaling up, followed by strike missions and operation in the muddy season.

Ukrainian kamikaze UGVs blow up dugouts from the inside (Operation "Vivaldi")

In Operation "Vivaldi", Ukrainian kamikaze UGVs drove into the underground shelters of Russian infantry and detonated there (source). Here the ground robot delivers a charge to places where an FPV cannot fly and where fragmentation effect from the air is useless.

update Kuryer — InformNapalm traced Chinese electronics in the developer's supply chain

At Tsentr-2026, the VDV for the first time air-dropped the Russian Kuryer UGV from an Il-76 at an altitude of about 600 m. The operators were dropped in advance; connecting and getting on task took 3–5 minutes. The robot with a 7.62 mm machine gun supported assault groups, brought up ammunition and evacuated the wounded (source). What is new is in the documents. InformNapalm found dozens of declarations for Chinese electronics, including from Shenzhen-based HD LED TECHNOLOGY, and long-standing business ties between the developer Zorikto Gombozhapov and China (source).

update TShRK "Shturm" — the system's composition and relaying via a UAV revealed; the exercise did not end according to plan

At the Tsentr-2026 exercise, the Russian heavy assault robotic system (TShRK) "Shturm" was shown in its full composition. It includes a tank with a shortened 125 mm gun, a support vehicle with 30 mm autocannons and ATGMs, and a protected combat control post (source). According to RussianArms, the link between the control post and the firing platform can go directly or through a relay on a UAV. The gun is a shortened, reduced-ballistics version of the 2A82 family (source). Also shown there was the anti-aircraft "Derivatsiya-PVO" with a 57 mm 2A90 gun with a range of up to 4.5 km, paired with the T-14. The Russian milinfolive published footage in which the "teletank" finished the exercise "not quite according to plan" (source).

The scale of the drone war: September statistics

update Rubikon — 111,891 sorties in September, more than a thousand Ukrainian ground robots hit

The Russian Rubikon Center published its report for September. The figures show that the main work is directed at communications, drones and ground robotics, not at armor (source). According to Rubikon, it hit 3996 UAVs, 2446 "Baba Yagas" (Ukrainian heavy hexacopters), 1125 ground drones, 1485 communications assets, 427 UAV control posts and 226 radars and EW assets. Tanks, meanwhile, only 7. Another 4227 Ukrainian drones, according to the center, were suppressed by EW.

For comparison: the AFU General Staff counts 2837 Russian UGVs destroyed over the whole war, plus 13 in a day (source). Both figures are claims by the parties, but they show that ground robots have ceased to be exotic. In separate videos, Rubikon shows intercepts of Ukrainian long-range FP-2, "Maya", B-2, "Liutyi", "Bobr", "Rubaka", E-300 (source), and in a video of air defense combat groups — "Chaklun", "Leleka-100M2", Hornet, DARTS (source). The center's crews strike the rear with FPV drones to a depth of up to 60 km from the line of contact (source).

The Ukrainian side reports figures that are no smaller. By a Ukrainian channel's count, in September the USF (Unmanned Systems Forces) flew 2.5 times more strike sorties and hit 2.6 times more targets than a year earlier (source). The USF brigade Nemesis hit five radars, two "Buk" launchers and one "Tor" in a month (source). Ukrainian FP-2s destroyed a "Pantsir-S2" (source).

update Firefly — serial kits in two sizes at ~$200 are reaching the troops

The module for guiding drops from heavy bombers has entered series production in two variants (source). The compact FF85 is designed for OGB-1 and 82 mm mortar bombs. The larger FF120 is for MOA-400, MOA-900, 105 mm shells and 120 mm mortar bombs. A kit costs about $200, i.e. a precision drop is cheaper than any FPV with the same warhead.

Intelligence and data: Tsimbulova

NASA FIRMS revealed fires at the Russian "Tsimbulova" droneport

The open NASA FIRMS thermal anomaly detector once again worked as a strike assessment tool. On the night of October 3 it showed a series of fires at one of Russia's largest Shahed launch hubs in Oryol region. The first hotspots appeared around 01:33, and by 06:45 there were about ten (source). The facility has at least 12 launchers, about a hundred storage buildings and long rail launchers that are associated with jet-powered Gerans. Monitoring channels place the fire in the area of the stationary "Geran-5" launchers (source).

The value of the data lies in comparison. Imagery from September 29 showed that Russia was expanding the complex literally days before the strike: building shelters, garages and launch infrastructure. Now they can be compared with new frames. Authors of OSINT channels overlay the FIRMS map directly onto satellite imagery (source).

Europe, Middle East, Taiwan, Cuba

The US is deploying drones and unmanned boats at Guantanamo

US Southern Command is creating at the Guantanamo base a site for the new Autonomous Warfare Command, formed in April for Latin America and the Caribbean (source). The first systems are already working for the "Western Hemisphere" task force against drug cartel boats. The Russian UAVDEV writes that a USV (unmanned surface vessel) test range is being set up at the base (source). For Cuba this means the testing of US autonomy in the immediate vicinity of its territory.

AEVEX enters Taiwan with Lynx boats and the experience of operating 350 USVs from the acquired Black Sea

The US company AEVEX has set up operations in Taiwan despite Chinese sanctions. Lynx USVs have been handed over to the island's marines for training (source). VANDAL and Onyx drones made together with Taiwan's CiRC were shown, and a memorandum was signed with the Chung-Shan Institute. Through the purchase of the company Black Sea, AEVEX gained the experience of operating 350 boats with 25 thousand hours of operating time, including in the Strait of Hormuz. Separately, the COMPASS-X network, which links air, surface and underwater platforms, is being promoted.

Lithuania and Moldova: drones and missiles in neighbors' airspace

On the morning of October 3, three "Banderol" cruise missiles and two drones passed over Moldova within 15 minutes. Explosions and fires were recorded in several districts (source). In Lithuania, airspace near Vilnius was temporarily closed and NATO fighters were scrambled. According to a Ukrainian channel, an unknown object, probably a drone, flew in from the direction of Belarus (source).

Military AI and electronics

Saab will adopt adaptive AI from Finland's NestAI — probably in the Gripen's EW

Sweden's Saab has agreed with Finland's NestAI to adopt AI that continues to learn from operational data after deployment (source). Delivery goes through NestOS, an open modular OS that allows third-party algorithms. For the Gripen this is probably the U/AP-39 EW pod with automatic threat classification and real-time selection of jamming type. The channel's assessment that the combination "outperforms" the NGJ-HB and "Khibiny" is the author's opinion, not confirmed data.

Ondas Dronebuster Reach — counter-drone EW with a range of up to 10 km

The US company Ondas has moved the Dronebuster into the class of long-range non-kinetic defense (source). The system jams control links and satellite navigation. The claimed 10 km is the effective range stated by the manufacturer.

Priority 2. Military innovation

The US Air Force has received the first "loyal wingmen" YFQ-44A and YFQ-42A at Creech

The US Air Force handed the first prototype CCA (Collaborative Combat Aircraft — drones for joint operations with manned fighters) over to the 556th Test and Evaluation Squadron before the configuration is finalized (source). This way tactics and logistics are worked out in real operation rather than after entry into service. The YFQ-44A Fury from Anduril weighs about 2300 kg, reaches Mach 0.95 and withstands 9 g. In July an AIM-120 was launched from it. The YFQ-42A from General Atomics is designed to be stealthy; by estimates it is heavier (up to 8 t) and slower (about Mach 0.7).

Germany will form an unmanned systems regiment in the 10th Armored Division in 2027

The Bundeswehr is moving from scattered drone units to a regular regiment with strike systems with a range of up to 500 km, an EW company and drone interception units (source). Initial readiness is expected in 2027 with a strength of 300 personnel, after which the strength will grow to 600. If successful, such regiments will appear in other divisions too. The 45th Brigade will receive counter-drone assets before its transfer to Lithuania.

update AutoWarCom — a budget benchmark of about $74 billion and full readiness by October 1, 2027

The transitional stage of the US autonomous systems command is proceeding under the "Agincourt" project. It is overseen by DIU Director Owen West and Navy SEAL veteran Max Strasizer (source). The budget still has to be passed through Congress, and some of the generals fear overlapping authority. In parallel, the DIU is looking among service members for FPV pilots to test the Gauntlet series under the Drone Dominance program (source).

update NASAMS — Belgium is purchasing 10 systems and restoring medium-range air defense

The contract with Kongsberg worth 10 billion Norwegian kroner closes Belgium's roughly twenty-year absence of medium-range air defense (source). Initial operation is scheduled from 2027. The package includes AN/MPQ-64F1 radars and AMRAAM and AMRAAM-ER missiles with ranges of up to 25 and 50 km respectively.

update IRIS-T SLM — Diehl will develop a naval version for F125 frigates

German F125 frigates currently have only short-range air defense; the naval version of IRIS-T SLM is to close this gap (source).

Ukraine's defense industry is entering NATO markets

Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara offered the JEF (the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force) countries Ukrainian experience in countering drones and protecting Baltic undersea infrastructure. The formats are Drone Deal, Train with Ukraine and Build with Ukraine (source). L7 Simulators received NATO codification (13-digit numbers) for its entire line of 50+ simulators. This is an identification mechanism in the alliance's logistics, not certification (source). Lviv-based THOR'S HAVEN showed the TH-MOS-01 mobile command post for five people. It deploys in less than 10 minutes, has a 10 kWh battery, costs €29 thousand and is already used in about 30 AFU units (source).

Norwegian test: a Chinese NIO electric car sent about 90% of its traffic to China

Norwegian researchers placed an electric car in a mine shaft to cut it off from the network. The car constantly tried to contact servers in China, and the data were encrypted (source). In the case of a Chinese bus, the manufacturer could remotely control the battery and power supply. For military logistics and critical infrastructure this is an argument against Chinese civilian equipment with remote access.

Other signals

• The DPRK announced a test of an intermediate-range missile "with AI technologies" capable of changing its trajectory at low altitude (source). The South Korean military recorded a flight of more than 700 km, KCNA speaks of 1000 km (source).

• Russia is adapting the LMUR for a ground launcher and upgrading the remaining T-80U/UD to the T-80UE1. By the count of OSINT researcher Jompy, as of last year 92 such tanks out of 193 remained in storage (source).

• Baikal Electronics showed a prototype GPGPU core that is positioned as a functional analog of the Nvidia Jetson Orin for drones and robotics; the source considers this more of a marketing move (source).

Russia has shifted its air campaign toward the transport connectivity of the rear: bridges, logistics centers (Hostomel), dry cargo ships off Odesa and Chornomorsk, DCs (data processing centers). Zelensky stated that Russia has accumulated hundreds of ballistic missiles for a winter campaign aimed at driving the population out of large cities (source). The Russian Rybar itself admits that 27 strikes on DCs since September 20 produced only local and temporary disruptions, because a significant part of the load is hosted on foreign servers (source).

Ukraine is responding against oil logistics and the defense industry. The Kaluga Radio Tube Plant, which produces parts for the Kh-101 and Iskanders, was hit (source). An analyst of a Ukrainian channel considers the strike on the LPDS (line production and dispatch station) "Samara" underestimated. According to preliminary data, 8 tanks were damaged there, and it is a node connecting oil flows from Western Siberia, Kazakhstan, the ports and Druzhba (source). A counter-signal: the Ukrainian DniproOfficial notes that Russia is shortening refinery repair times (source).

At the front, a Ukrainian channel estimates Russian gains in September at 66 km², with the caveat that data on Ukrainian advances are published with a delay. By its count, in May–June the Defense Forces regained at least 108 km² (source). Russian channels report advances near Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, Dobropillia and in Kharkiv region (source).

Diplomacy: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha declared readiness for an energy and Black Sea truce under the Indian plan (source). At the same time, nuclear rhetoric around Kaliningrad is growing in Russian channels (source). Zelensky expects the FP-9 ballistic missile with a range of 850 km to be ready this autumn (source). As an intelligence indicator: in Kremenchuk district, access to a number of areas has been closed and filming prohibited since October 3 (source).

What to watch

  1. The net launcher on UGVs is the first mass countermeasure against fiber-optic FPVs, against which EW does not work. Expect a responsive change in the approach trajectories of Russian FPVs against UGVs.
  2. "Flash's" claim about MESH relays in Kyiv shifts the capital's defense from an air defense task to a counterintelligence and radio direction-finding task. If the version is correct, the same link will also allow targeting of anti-aircraft assets on the bridges.
  3. The campaign against bridges has entered a phase of iterations with objective monitoring. Russian channels openly name the bridges of Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro as the next targets. Pontoons and dams will take up to three months.
  4. The bottleneck of Ukraine's interception of jet-powered Shaheds has shifted to ammunition: 20 mm rounds for F-16s and the cost of interceptors. TAF is responding with cheap and fast interceptors.
  5. The US, Germany and Taiwan are institutionalizing autonomous systems: Guantanamo, the Bundeswehr UAV regiment, AEVEX in the Taiwan Strait, CCA in a line squadron.

What's new in UAVs and counter-UAV

• Net-launcher APS on Ukrainian UGVs (Ukraine) — shoots down FPVs, including fiber-optic ones; sources describe the operating mode, automatic or manual, differently.

• MESH relays in Kyiv (Russia, according to the Ukrainian side's claim) — 1–3 nodes, a short link in the terminal phase of the Gerans' flight.

• [upd] KRSN / jet-powered Gerans (Russia) — the Northern Bridge hit, both of Kyiv's cable-stayed bridges under attack.

• Octopus (Ukraine, TAF) — under $3000, speed +20%; an interceptor for high-speed jet drones is planned.

• "Alter Ego" amphibious UGV (Ukraine) — first combat run of 70 km across water obstacles.

• [upd] "Kuryer" (Russia) — air-dropped from an Il-76 from 600 m; Chinese electronics in the supply chain.

• [upd] "Arena-M" (Russia) — 12 charges, plan for up to 36, intercepting FPVs and fixed-wing UAVs 1–2 m from the turret.

• [upd] Firefly — FF85 and FF120 at ~$200 each.

• [upd] KASIRGA (Azerbaijan and Turkey) — by payloadUAV's calculation, the radius with return is no more than ~50 km, and the link without a TB2 relay at an altitude of 100 m breaks off at about 48 km (source).

• Dronebuster Reach (US, Ondas) — portable EW out to 10 km.

• MO-Phantom16 (manufacturer M&O) — a radio environment simulator: up to 24 virtual RIDs (drone remote identification signals) and 16 FPV video channels (source).

Military space and space-derived data

update Rassvet — Zelensky asks Trump to impose sanctions on the project's Chinese participants

Ukraine is trying to stop the Russian Starlink analog before deployment. Zelensky asked Trump to impose sanctions on Russian and Chinese companies associated with the Rassvet system and claims that China is participating in the work (source). He expects the system to launch at the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027 (source). Russian commentators also link the future control range of the TShRK "Shturm" to Rassvet, but this is an assumption (source).

A Russian channel advertises ready-made Starlink terminals that have passed verification, with an unlimited plan for 22 thousand rubles a month. Delivery across the "new territories" and a demonstration of operation at a location in the DPR are promised (source). So circumvention of SpaceX restrictions for Russian users continues to work as a commercial service.

The US has shut down the DSP system and is starting to deploy the SDA transport layer

The US Space Force has ended operation of the DSP early warning system, which had been in service since 1970: a total of 23 satellites were launched. The last two spacecraft have been moved to a graveyard orbit (source). The mission is carried by SBIRS of 6 geostationary and 4 highly elliptical spacecraft. The next system, Next-Gen OPIR, will be multi-orbit. Northrop Grumman is preparing to launch the first batch of 42 satellites of the SDA (Space Development Agency) transport layer for secure military data transmission (source).

Data access. NASA FIRMS once again provided the first independent strike assessment — of the Tsimbulova droneport — even before commercial imagery (source). Kyrgyzstan opened a space monitoring center for the Altair-1 satellite developed by the Emirati Orbitworks. The spacecraft was launched by a Falcon 9 on October 1, resolution 1 m; thanks to an Nvidia module, images arrive in Bishkek ready-processed (source). This is another independent source of meter-class imagery in Central Asia.

Under the radar

• [TECH] Northrop Grumman FORTITUDE — a GaN (gallium nitride) chip combining a switch and a filter for radar, EW, satellite communications and GNSS, turned out to be a renamed SLCFET patented back in 2013. payloadUAV analyzed the architecture of the AlGaN/GaN superlattice with parallel channels and a figure of merit of about 1.8 THz. The channel showed that the brochures contradict each other (10 or 12 layers), "threefold" and "20 times" are given without a baseline, and serial production is expected only in two to three years (source).

• [TECH] Calculation for a heavy cargo hexacopter: 15 kg over 20 km one way with a wind of 9 m/s. The electric version on LiPo at 155 Wh/kg cannot complete the task at any battery mass; the minimum deficit is 0.681 kWh with 50 kg of batteries. A hybrid with a Richenpower H8 generator returns with 58–66% fuel remaining. Flying with cargo downwind saves about 23% of fuel (source).

• The "BOS" firmware for the 701, 510 and 510B controllers. It comes with a passive radio detector of nearby digital drones and a communications "black box" that saves 20 seconds of video before a link loss. There is a calculation of the cargo drop point accounting for wind; the basic license is free, PRO costs 3000 rubles. The firmware is declared for use in the SMO zone, i.e. on the Russian side (source).

• The limit of autonomy comes down to the operator's attention. The number of vehicles per person should be calculated from the time needed for meaningful verification of decisions, and prohibitions on the use of force should be kept outside the AI itself (source).

• The Ukrainian "Protydron" simulator — a pump-action shotgun with VR goggles for training to shoot birdshot and buckshot at FPVs. There is a mobile "Kompakt" version that deploys in a basement or dugout without 220 V power (source).

• American South 8 has launched production of 18650 ARCTIC AE35 cells with a liquefied-gas electrolyte. They charge and operate at −60 °C, which is important for drones and communications in the Arctic (source).

And what are our Chinese comrades up to?

• China presents its participation in Tsentr-2026 as a test of inter-theater deployment and coalition command. The PLA Central Theater Command contingent worked in a three-tier structure: exercise directorate, joint headquarters and combat groups (source). Combined logistics — aviation and rail — was emphasized separately (source).

• At the Chebarkul range, Chinese Type 99A tanks and Type 04A IFVs of the 82nd Group Army stood with welded-on anti-drone "cope cages". This is a visible transfer of Ukrainian experience into the PLA (source).

• H-6K bombers with the YJ-21 air-launched anti-ship missile were shown (source).

• The PLA Navy is practicing the entry and exit of Type 726 air-cushion landing craft from the dock of the Type 071 ship "Yimengshan" (source).

• AEVEX is preparing in Taiwan an unmanned response to a scenario in the strait: Lynx USVs, joint drones with CiRC, the COMPASS-X network (source).

External analysis

• The Pentagon is removing bureaucracy from counter-drone defense of its own territory. A Hegseth directive declares delays in spectrum and clearance approvals an operational risk. Timelines for issuing an ATO (authority to operate) for vetted systems are being cut from months to days and weeks, with JIATF-401 as coordinator (source). The Telegram circuit sees mainly AutoWarCom, while the practical shift is happening through procedures.

• The US Army is creating its own FASCOM command for autonomous systems with a separate acquisition executive (source). The first ten graduates of the new Robotics Technician Integrator specialty (MOS 390A) completed a 19-week course on AI, UAVs, UGVs, EW and mesh networks (source). This is a response to the same personnel problem TAF talks about.

• At NATO's REPMUS 26 exercise, a Portuguese frigate repelled a simulated attack by more than 60 unmanned boats guided from UAVs (source). There, too, Stark showed the 12-meter Vanta 12 USV with four Sea Venom missiles and ten Cascade loitering munitions (source). NATO navies are seriously preparing for swarm boat attacks on the Black Sea model.

• The Turkish-Azerbaijani axis is rapidly expanding its range of loitering munitions. At ADEX, the first export contract for the Baykar Mizrak was signed: weight 200 kg, payload 40 kg, range more than 1000 km, a radio-frequency seeker is possible (source).

• Counter-drone protection is being integrated directly into light vehicles. Kongsberg will supply Protector RS4 weapon stations with built-in C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems — means of countering UAVs) for Dutch JLTVs, at least 150 vehicles by 2028 (source).

• The War Zone confirmed the expenditure of a single squadron, VFA-41, in the operation against Iran: 421 weapons worth about $43.6 million (source). The submarine kill marking on a Super Hornet, discussed by Russian channels, is not directly explained by these data.
